Roof Repair in Washingtonville, NY
A recent windstorm caused a tree branch to penetrate the roof up near the peak. Initially, it looked like the roof repair job would entail replacing a few shingles and maybe a plywood patch. If the roof wasn’t repaired, a rainstorm could potentially cause more damage through the penetration in the roof. First, we removed shingles where the branch penetrated the roof. The hole required new plywood underneath for proper support/sealing, rather than simply putting caulk or some other sealant on the opening as this is an improper way to fix such damages. We also noticed that plywood met at the peak from both sides of the roof. To allow for proper ventilation, it’s necessary to have a gap of approximately 3″ at the ridge. That way, air can flow up from soffits up under the roof and escape out the top, preventing moisture buildup from inside the house and deteriorating the plywood under shingles. We ended up removing all peak shingles, cutting plywood and shingles back for proper airflow. Then installed GAF Snow Country Ridge Vent with matching GAF TimberTex Ridge Cap the entire length of the roof for a lasting repair, not just where the branch pierced the roof. At any area, we replaced plywood, new GAF Timberline HD shingles were reinstalled over GAF WeatherWatch Ice and Water Shield to ensure nothing will get into the plywood and into the house. A few-hour job turned into two days. We don’t look for more work than there is as we were plenty busy with recent wind storms, but many times once we’re on the roof, we can notice potential issues that are better off addressed at the time vs. the homeowner waiting to find out when it’s ‘too late, and a small issue becomes a much larger problem. Sometimes a few shingles ripped off in a wind storm can be a good thing regarding preventative maintenance.
